Royal Pie Race is a board game project that combines illustration, game design, and packaging design to create a board game that also serves as a box for the game. Players make their way from a village to the castle to enter into a pie competition, with obstacles along the way that could make or break the journey for them. This fun game brings excitement, fantasy, and enchantment to players, with a primary audience being children and families.

THE problem

Design packaging for a product with a folding container.

Create a children’s fantasy board game that utilizes the packaging as the board itself.

THE solution

The interior design for Royal Pie Race, which serves as the game board itself. Using bright colors and entertaining illustrations, the board tells a story that the player follows along with as they get closer to the finish line. Pieces of copy serve alongside the road to guide the player to the castle at the end. It helps to create a design that is understandable and a story that doesn’t need to be explicitly written out.

The exterior design for Royal Pie Race, which serves as the box to hold the game pieces and cards. The outside design takes key elements from the game and puts them on display to give a sense of what is to come once players open the box! Fun copy and illustrations allow the story to shine on the outside, as well as the inside.

CLOse ups

Body copy is used across the board to not only direct players through different areas, but to also put important rules on the board. This allows players to easily follow along, and in the case of the Troll Bridge where a certain number on a die indicates their future in the game, it can be beneficial for information recall.

Individual spaces on the board are either blank or marked with a pie or crown, which indicates which card pile to choose from. These icons are repeated throughout the game in different areas and on the outside of the box.

The illustrative style of this game comes from old cartoons, like Rocky and Bullwinkle and Fractured Fairytales. Bright colors appeal to the target audience of children, while consistent art elements and repetition help connect the various pieces of the map. They create an enchanting experience and bring excitement to the game story.

Gameplay & cards

The locations on the board represent various fairytales that create a world within the game. As players make their way from the baker’s village to the castle for the contest, they encounter various different situations on game cards.

The board design gives a spot for the cards, which are simply designed and straight-forward in getting their message across so the younger audience can easily follow along!

Simple illustrations that are relevant to the game serve as the back of the cards, alongside the title. On the gameboard, you can see a spot dedicated to the cards with corresponding symbols. This same illustration is repeated on the outside of the box in patterns.

The game comes with pie tokens that serve as points throughout the game. The player with the most tokens wins, so these cards act as a way to gain or lose tokens throughout the game!
