The Haunting of Hill House redesign is book cover redesign project for the 65th Anniversary of Shirley Jackson’s classic horror novel. The newly designed cover brings to life the discomfort that readers feel when experiencing a ghost story. Inspired by dollhouses, this redesign brings a new twist to a scary story for a special edition version.

Redesign a book cover for a collector’s edition of a classic novel.

THE problem

Push boundaries and create an unnerving book cover for a horror novel with a unique display method for the special edition.

THE solution

The inspiration was a dollhouse, which the outside of is featured on the front cover with an uncomfortable tilt. The design pushes the edge of the page in an uncomfortable way, with a tilt in the letters and artwork to create an eerie feeling.

Interior cover

The interior of the dollhouse that is seen when the front cover is lifted continues that unsettling feeling. The mismatched rooms and strong shadows create a feeling of uncertainty and evoke the creepiness of horror novels.

The cover for this edition is printed specially on a transparent layer, revealing the interior of the dollhouse on the front inside page. Above and to the right show what this might look like in this special edition of the story.
